Unidentified drone explodes near gas pipeline at Bulgarian-Romanian border, Kyiv to launch inquiry

On August 8, an unidentified drone exploded near an international gas pipeline on Bulgarian soil, according to Prime Minister Rumen Radev. The UAV crossed into Bulgaria from Romania before detonating approximately 100 meters inside the country, near a compressor station on the Trans-Balkan pipeline. Notably, the drone evaded detection in both Romanian and Bulgarian airspaces. Despite the blast, there were no casualties or structural damage.

The Bulgarian Defense Ministry's preliminary assessment indicates the drone is a Maya decoy drone, commonly used by Ukrainian forces. However, the ministry emphasized there is no evidence suggesting the incident was deliberate. In response, Kyiv asserted they did not target Bulgaria and expressed openness to a joint investigation into the cause of the incident.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi confirmed that Ukrainian forces did not intentionally direct any assets toward Bulgaria. Tykhyi further attributed the cause of drone incursions near Ukraine to Russia's ongoing war.

The incident in Bulgaria is part of a series of drone incursions reported in Romania this summer. Romanian air defenses successfully intercepted three Russian UAVs in a three-day span between July 24 and 26, leading to Bucharest summoning its Russian ambassador. Romania has also recorded numerous other drone intrusions throughout the ongoing war. The most significant incident occurred on May 29 when a Russian drone struck a residential building in Galați, injuring two individuals.

Ukraine and Russia both employ sophisticated systems of jamming and navigation spoofing to protect their respective territories from mass drone and missile attacks, which can sometimes cause drones to deviate from their intended paths.
