Trump loyalist Todd Blanche confirmed by Senate as US attorney general

The US Senate narrowly confirmed Todd Blanche as the next Attorney General, marking a significant victory for President Donald Trump. Blanche, who served as the acting Attorney General, faced opposition from some Republican senators over his ties to the president, notably his role as Trump's personal lawyer. The final vote was 50-49 in favor of Blanche, with two Republicans, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, voting against him.

Despite the controversy surrounding the department's creation of a $1.8 billion "anti-weaponization fund" and tax immunity for the president, his family, and his businesses, Blanche was confirmed. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana cast the deciding vote in Blanche's favor, emphasizing that while Blanche is not perfect, the alternative was a less effective acting Attorney General.

Critics, including Senator Chuck Schumer, argued that Blanche's confirmation would enable Trump's corruption. Blanche, who left a law firm to represent Trump, expressed gratitude for the Senate's support and acknowledged Trump's trust in him. The confirmation process was marred by controversy, including the department's handling of Jeffrey Epstein files and Blanche's refusal to meet with Epstein victims.

Blanche's confirmation has raised concerns about the independence of the Justice Department and its role in serving Trump's interests.
