Telangana explores wine tourism model

Telangana is exploring the concept of wine tourism, as Prohibition and Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao examined winery operations in Virginia, United States. The Minister toured Stone Tower Winery, studying vineyard activities, grape cultivation, wine production, fermentation, storage, ageing, bottling, quality control, and marketing.

He also observed how wineries blend with tourism through guided tours, hospitality, and curated visitor experiences. Rao suggested that Rangareddy and Vikarabad districts could become destinations for vineyard and winery-based tourism due to their closeness to Hyderabad and favorable grape-growing conditions. The government plans to investigate potential locations, climate suitability, and investment models before finalizing the proposal.

This initiative aligns with the Telangana Tourism Policy 2025-30, which seeks to diversify the state's tourism portfolio through private and public-private partnerships. At the Telangana Tourism Conclave, the government announced projects worth over ₹15,000 crore, including a proposed vineyard resort with a winery walkthrough and traditional grape-stomping activities.

Rao stated that Telangana would study successful international models before establishing an integrated wine tourism ecosystem that combines vineyards, accommodation, and local cuisine, all while adhering to the state's regulatory guidelines.
