Spain deploys 275 firefighters to tackle Andalusia forest blaze

On Saturday, more than 275 firefighters were deployed to combat a challenging forest fire in the Andalusia region of southern Spain. The blaze, located north of the town of Niebla, is active over approximately 4,000 hectares (9,900 acres) and is driven by changing winds that complicate firefighting efforts. Andalusian emergency service adviser, Antonio Sanz, stated that while no residential areas are currently threatened, a window of opportunity opened briefly for firefighters, but conditions are expected to worsen later in the day.

The military unit providing emergency assistance contributed 60 troops to the firefighting efforts, which are also being supported by around 20 aircraft and heavy machinery. Spain has experienced a difficult summer for wildfires, with numerous blazes forcing evacuations, particularly in the central parts of the country. In July, a forest fire in the Avila region near Madrid was deemed the largest Spain had seen in recent history, while another significant blaze in Almeria province in Andalusia resulted in 14 deaths early in the month.

Climate change, driven by human activities, has exacerbated heatwaves and drought across Europe this year.
