Sifuna: I campaigned for Governor Fernandes Barasa but he turned against me

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has accused Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa of betraying him after helping Sifuna win his gubernatorial election in 2022. Speaking in Kakamega on Saturday, Sifuna said he was sent to the region by ODM leader Raila Odinga to campaign for Barasa. Sifuna and former Kakamega Governor Ayinda Savula worked together to mobilize votes for Barasa, but their relationship deteriorated after Barasa took office.

Sifuna claimed Barasa treated him like an adversary after taking power. The senator warned that their political fallout could impact the 2027 General Election. Sifuna also linked Barasa's future to the opposition's campaign against President William Ruto. In Western Kenya, political leaders are positioning themselves in advance of the 2027 election, with competing factions vying for control of the region's large voting bloc.
