Serbia and Ukraine pledge closer economic ties, eye free trade deal

Ukraine and Serbia plan to discuss their EU accession clusters during President Volodymyr Zelensky's first official visit to Serbia, according to Deputy Head of the Office of the President Ihor Zhovkva, as reported by Ukrinform.

During a television appearance, Zhovkva emphasized the significance of this visit, stating that they will discuss various matters, including bilateral contacts at the political and economic levels, and the coordination of positions on European integration. Both Serbia and Ukraine are candidate countries for EU membership, and they will likely discuss opening the remaining clusters for each nation.

Zhovkva mentioned that they will also address the issue of Russian aggression and its impact on the continent. When asked about Serbia's stance on non-participation in sanctions against Russia, Zhovkva noted that this issue would be discussed as well, particularly with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. He stressed that failing to impose sanctions on an aggressor country while being part of the European continent is not entirely correct.

Zhovkva explained that aligning with the foreign policy of the European Union is an obligation for every country seeking EU membership. He concluded that it is crucial for countries aspiring to become full members of the European Union to closely align themselves with its policies.
