Sarfaraz Khan in contention to replace Sai Sudharsan for Sri Lanka Tests

India finds itself in a quandary as their designated No. 3 batsman Sai Sudharsan faces a likely absence from the upcoming two Test series against Sri Lanka, commencing on August 15 in Galle. The southpaw has been rehabilitating his foot issue at the BCCI Centre of Excellence but remains uncertain of clearance to partake in the crucial fixtures.

With that in mind, Shaik Rasheed and Sarfaraz Khan have emerged as possible replacements for the batsman. It is known that Sarfaraz has been undergoing fitness assessments at the Centre for over a week, while Rasheed has been summoned to the Bengaluru facility on Sunday for his own evaluation. The 21-year-old Rasheed recently toured with the India A team in Sri Lanka last month, tallying scores of 45, 63, and 20 across three innings.

The youngster has been on the selectors' radar and was set to join a specialist batter camp at the Centre in the coming weeks, alongside other players including R Smaran and Aman Mokhade. The Indian team management is concerned about a shortage of specialist batters and has informed the selectors about this need. Although the selectors were eager to introduce more specialist batters, their plans were thwarted by the participation of Devdutt Padikkal, Sai Sudharsan, and Dhruv Jurel in the India A fixtures.

It seems Sarfaraz has been suggested by key figures to open higher in the order during domestic matches, given his continued presence in the selectors' plans. With a solid track record as a quality spin bowler, robust fitness, and extensive international experience, it would not be surprising if Rasheed secures the nod, given his positive feedback from CoE coaches.

However, an official announcement from the Indian cricket board remains pending, clarifying the replacement.
