Russian strike kills 3-year-old boy and his grandparents in Kyiv Oblast village

On 8 August, a Russian strike in the village of Pukhivka, located in Kyiv Oblast's Brovary raion, claimed the lives of a three-year-old boy, his grandmother, and his grandfather. The attack also left four other individuals injured. Zelenskyy reported that the boy's parents, a 15-year-old brother, and a neighbor who had come to assist were among the casualties.

The neighbor's injuries occurred following a second Russian strike on the same location, a tactic known as the double-tap approach where a follow-up strike is executed after an initial one to catch any potential rescuers or responders.

The family was struck by the missile in their residence, causing severe injuries including thermal burns and shrapnel wounds. The neighbor was also hurt while trying to help the family during the aftermath of the initial attack. President Zelenskyy emphasized that the strike targeted an ordinary residential building, resulting in a devastating human toll.

In addition to the attack in Pukhivka, Russia also targeted civilian infrastructure in Kyiv with six ballistic missiles overnight. One individual was killed as a result, with their body discovered by rescue workers during the cleanup process. Zelenskyy appealed to Ukraine's partners to tighten sanctions on Russia's ballistic-missile production and supply more air defense systems and interceptors, as Russia has been outpacing Ukraine in this area.

In July, a third of Russia's missile launches were ballistic, a type of missile that provides a short warning period and is difficult for Ukraine's systems, aside from the Patriot, to intercept effectively. In the recent attacks, Ukraine has managed to down only two out of 36 ballistic missiles, resulting in a success rate of approximately one in twenty.

Russia is believed to construct around three ballistic missiles per day, while Ukraine's interceptor stockpile remains severely limited.
