Runway defect: Passengers stranded as UK airport suspends flights

Bristol Airport in the United Kingdom halted all flight operations on Friday evening after discovering a defect on part of its runway, leaving passengers stranded and diverting flights to other airports. The suspension, initially set to last until 8am on Saturday, extended into Saturday morning as officials conducted inspections and repairs on the affected section.

The airport emphasized that the measure was precautionary and that passenger safety was the top priority. Passengers were directed to contact their airlines for updates on individual flights; however, EasyJet warned travelers to expect ongoing disruptions.

Passenger Richard Broadbent described a chaotic scene at the airport, where flights were suddenly cancelled and all travelers were moved to a crowded area. "She said suddenly all flights were cancelled and all passengers were moved to one place down at ground level, and it was absolutely packed," he told the BBC. Passengers reported confusion and difficulty in retrieving their luggage, with some experiencing distress as alarms sounded.

Paul Smith, traveling to Glasgow for his son's 20th birthday, criticized the communication and support provided during the disruption. "The communication, advice and support for passengers has been really poor," he stated.

Multiple passengers struggled to obtain clear information about the situation, with some reporting they were left in the baggage reclaim area searching for their luggage. Despite the airport's statement that the issue involved a defect on the runway without specifying the cause, flights bound for Bristol were diverted to London Gatwick, Birmingham, and Cardiff.

The airport advised affected passengers to contact their airlines for the latest updates. As of the report, there was no indication when normal operations would fully resume.
