Roundup: ND's Barbarits, West boys golf shine at Elks; 'Burg's Evans signs with Marshall

On Tuesday, August 4, Notre Dame's Garrett Barbarits delivered an impressive four-over 40 score, securing the low individual round at Elks Country Club's nine-hole tournament, which included Notre Dame, South Webster, West, and Waverly. West claimed victory with a 37-over 181, edging out Barbarits' 43-over 187 by six strokes. South Webster rounded out the top three with a 51-over 195, while Waverly's 71-over 215 finished last.

Owen Richards led the Senators with a 41, West's winning total was contributed by Harrison Richards (44), Cason Frump (46), and Logan Journey (50). Bentley Day and Elliott Kegley scored 51 and 56 for West, respectively. Meanwhile, in another development, Wheelersburg's standout multi-sport athlete, Kenyon Evans, announced his signing with Marshall University's track and field program.

Evans, an OHSAA Division III State Runner-Up in long jump, demonstrated his versatility by excelling in both athletics and academics. During his senior year, he led the team offensively with 37 catches for 450 yards and three touchdowns while defensively recording 13 pass deflections and four interceptions. As a track and field performer, Evans secured four district championships in the 100 meter dash (10.89), 200 meter dash (22.32), high jump (6-4), and long jump (22-3).

He subsequently qualified for the OHSAA Division III State Championship in both events with jumps of 22-11 and 6-3 in the long and high jumps, respectively. His long jump would have secured a State Championship in any other division, ranking 81st nationally and second in Ohio. Evans' impressive performance also earned him a spot alongside fellow classmate Cashton Adkins in Marshall's 2026 recruiting class.
