Protest against delay in implementing women’s reservation

On Saturday, the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) organized a demonstration at Gandhi Square in Mysuru, calling on the government to end its delay in implementing the Women’s Reservation Bill. The protestors demanded the immediate enactment of the legislation, which would guarantee women a 33% reservation in both the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.

Devi, the State Secretary for AIDWA, emphasized the urgency of the issue, stating that the National Coalition for Women’s Reservation had urged the government to abandon any attempts to prevent women from receiving the reserved seats. She highlighted that despite 75 years of independence, women remain underrepresented in India's political and administrative systems, with only 74 out of 543 Lok Sabha members and 42 out of 245 Rajya Sabha members being women.

The situation in Karnataka's Legislative Assembly was even more disheartening, with only 10 women out of 224 members. Consequently, AIDWA called for the removal of the conditions attached to the 106th Constitutional Amendment, which provides for the 33% reservation for women, and for the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill without delay during the ongoing Parliament session.
