First day of checks on travelers from Italy: police ask for documentation from only 5% or 10% of passengers

From this Saturday, a hundred National Police agents are taking part in border controls established for travelers from Italy, according to sources from the Ministry of the Interior. The deployment derives from the Government's decision, adopted late on Friday evening, to temporarily re-establish controls at Spanish airports and ports with direct connections with the transalpine country.

The measure came into force at 00.00 on Saturday and will initially be maintained until the same time on September 7, although the deadline may be modified depending on the evolution of the situation. Spain re-established border controls after Giorgia Meloni's Government rejected lifting those it has applied since August 1 to travelers from Spain, following the massive arrival of migrants in Ceuta, a territory that, however, does not practically belong to the Schengen Area, because all travelers who want to go from there to the Peninsula have their documentation controlled.
