‘Panthic’ politics: SAD-BJP renewed alliance could reignite Akali Dal’s core base ahead of 2027 Punjab polls

As political polarization continues in Punjab, the prospect of a renewed alliance between the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could potentially rekindle the SAD's core support base ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. This strategic shift has the potential to reignite the SAD's influence, which has been in decline over the past decade due to internal divisions and fractured leadership.

The current struggles of the SAD, which is led by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, are evident in the recent virtual split within the party. The rebellion faction formed the Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit), while another outfit led by pro-Khalistan MP Amritpal Singh who is currently incarcerated, has been steadily gaining ground in the 'Panthic' space. The 'Panthic' spirit, which represents the collective identity of the Sikh community, remains a critical component of Punjab's electoral landscape.

Political observers are closely monitoring the possibility of a SAD-BJP alliance for the 2027 elections, as it could reshape the State's political dynamics. Kehar Singh, a former head of the Department of Political Science at Punjabi University, noted that unity within the core agrarian Jat Sikh electorate is challenging without a clear path to authority.

"If the SAD believes there is a chance to return to power through the BJP alliance, Sukhbir Singh Badal and the SAD could become a rallying point for voters," he explained.

Despite the absence of formal announcements, a revived SAD-BJP partnership could significantly impact the upcoming elections, as it would pose a formidable challenge to the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress. The coalition's resurgence could deter voter fragmentation, thereby offering a more stable political future for the SAD and Punjab.
