Over 20,000 flee as B.C evacuation orders in full swing due to aggressive wildfire

More than 20,000 residents were compelled to evacuate British Columbia communities near Okanagan Lake overnight as a rapidly spreading wildfire continued its advance. The Bald Range wildfire ignited on Friday, roughly 15 kilometers west of a community, and swelled to 9,500 hectares by Saturday morning. The BC Wildfire Service described the fire as highly aggressive, displaying rank 5 behavior with a fast rate of spread and moderate to long-range spotting.

Gusty winds further exacerbated the situation, complicating firefighting efforts. Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen information officer Erick Thompson strongly urged residents to leave their properties immediately, describing it as one of the most rapid and extensive wildfires the region has ever faced. Thompson emphasized the importance of leaving, especially for those with children, due to heavy traffic and crowded reception centers.

Some homes have reportedly succumbed to the fire. Corey Charlesworth, a resident near Summerland, recounted how he rushed home from work after a neighbor warned him about the fire's proximity, which had grown from 15 kilometers away to 5,000 hectares. He expressed concern for nearby ranching areas and residents, praising firefighters' efforts and the actions of nearby orchard owners who enabled irrigation sprinklers.

The wildfire also necessitated the evacuation of 48 residents from Dr. Andrew Pavilion and 190 from Summerland Seniors Village by Interior Health. Some residents had to be evacuated by helicopter due to the rapid-fire's roadblockage. Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR) warned that navigation apps were directing motorists towards the wildfire after Highway 97 closure, urging drivers to rely on official road closure information from DriveBC.
