NDC has been ‘more zealous’ in prosecuting opposition than its own – Kofi Bentil

Kofi Bentil, a senior lawyer and Vice-President of IMANI Africa, has expressed concerns over the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government's selective approach to justice. Speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile, Bentil argued that the ruling party has been more aggressive in prosecuting opposition figures while being more lenient towards its own members.

He stated that both sides of the debate over selective justice could present compelling arguments, but the government's actions over its four-year term would ultimately determine the validity of the allegation. Bentil's comments come following a large demonstration by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Accra, where they accused the government of undermining democracy and weakening key institutions.

The demonstration culminated in a petition being presented to the Supreme Court and the seat of government, Jubilee House. Two years into the NDC's mandate, Bentil believes that sufficient evidence exists for citizens to assess the party's approach to law enforcement and prosecution. He noted that there are grounds to claim that the NDC has been more zealous in prosecuting opposition members and more lenient towards its own party members, indicating a pattern of selective justice.

However, he did not claim that the debate was settled, acknowledging that the government's supporters could present their own evidence to refute the selective justice claims. Bentil emphasized the importance of vigilance and active participation in protecting civic freedoms, urging citizens to remain vigilant to prevent a further erosion of democratic freedoms.
