MP demands explanation over arrest of two podcasters, questions police consistency

RSN Rayer, the MP for Jelutong, has called for an explanation from the authorities, including the Home Minister, regarding the arrest and detention of two podcasters, Brian Kong and Shamsul Saad. Rayer questioned the rationale behind the action taken against the podcasters, expressing concern over how authorities handle cases involving remarks related to race and religion.

He emphasized that podcasting is not a crime and that political discourse should not be treated as criminal offenses merely because it involves criticism or unpopular views.

Rayer argued that discussions that may be controversial, uncomfortable, or strongly worded should not automatically lead to arrests unless there is clear evidence of wrongdoing. He pointed out a discrepancy in the treatment of cases involving remarks touching on race and religion, citing a police report lodged against preacher Ridhuan Tee Abdullah for allegedly making divisive remarks on social media.

Rayer questioned why no similar action had been taken against Ridhuan Tee, who has repeatedly made such statements on Facebook.

Additionally, Rayer brought up a police report lodged by PKR member Rozan Azen Mat Rasip against Ridhuan Tee for allegedly making racially and religiously insensitive remarks. He also cited remarks by Ridhuan Tee labeling Malay Pakatan Harapan supporters as "barua" and non-Malay PH supporters as "kafir harbi," asking why police had not taken action against him. Rayer questioned the ongoing freedom Ridhuan Tee has to continue making such statements and asked how many police reports would be needed before action is taken.

The MP also raised concerns about remarks made by Jempol MP Shamsulkahar Mohd Deli during the recent Negeri Sembilan election campaign. Rayer claimed that Shamsulkahar had accused the DAP of being behind an edited image involving a pig dressed in royal attire, as well as allegations involving the Sultan of Selangor. He described these remarks as "malicious, reckless, dangerous, and racially divisive" and demanded that enforcement authorities uphold the principle of equality before the law as provided under the Federal Constitution. Rayer emphasized that selective police action must stop immediately.
