Mortal Kombat Director 'Not Sure' About Return for Third Movie as Mortal Kombat 3 Remains in Limbo

Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid has expressed uncertainty about returning to direct the third installment of the franchise, as work on the sequel remains uncertain. The filmmaker behind the first two live-action adaptations of the popular video game series spoke about the status of Mortal Kombat 3 during an interview with The Wrap.

When directly asked about the movie's progression or his willingness to return, McQuoid replied, "I don't know yet. I'm not sure." He further clarified that the film's life cycle is still ongoing. Screenwriter Jeremy Slater confirmed that he had begun writing a third film in the reboot saga at New York Comic Con in 2025, claiming that New Line and Warner Bros. were "so happy" with the second film.

However, the five-year gap between the films, coupled with lower-than-expected box office performance, may not have been enough to entice audiences. Despite promising projections, Mortal Kombat 2 only managed to gross $63 million globally in its opening weekend and a final total of $129 million, which, despite surpassing its $80 million budget, can still be considered unsuccessful.

McQuoid, while not completely ruling out a return to the franchise, mentioned that he has other projects in development, one of which he is currently casting. He emphasized that he never wants to close doors but always aims to open them. The status of Mortal Kombat 3 remains unknown, and for now, the movie has no release date.
