Mon Laferte Will Receive Social Justice Award & More Uplifting Moments in Latin Music

This week in the Latin music world, several uplifting moments took place. Chilean singer Mon Laferte will receive the prestigious Social Justice Award at the 39th annual Hispanic Heritage Awards on September 10 in Minneapolis. The honor recognizes her dedication to promoting conversations about human rights, gender equality, and social justice through her art and music.

Laferte expressed her gratitude for this recognition, stating that she feels honored to use her platforms to contribute to a sense of community and inspire others.

In addition to Mon Laferte, Marc Anthony and Yandel have been chosen as the 2026 Agents of Change. This award highlights artists who make a significant impact beyond music through philanthropic, humanitarian, and community-focused initiatives. Marc Anthony will be honored for his philanthropic work through the Maestro Cares Foundation, while Yandel will receive recognition for his support of community and educational initiatives, mental health in the music industry, and empowerment of new generations of artists.

Meanwhile, the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation awarded more than $1.7 million in scholarships to students pursuing music degrees from underserved backgrounds. Among the recipients, Puerto Rican violinist Razil Rosado will receive the Prodigy Scholarship, which covers up to $250,000 for four years of study at Berklee College of Music. Singer-songwriter Noel Schajris is the sponsor of this scholarship.

The Grammy Museum in Los Angeles also opened an exhibition showcasing the musical history of Banda El Recodo, an 88-year-old Sinaloan band. The exhibition features instruments, costumes, and album covers from various points in the group's career, which pioneered recording the genre and brought it to audiences across five continents. Banda El Recodo performed a free concert at the museum, marking the first time a regional Mexican band has played there.
