Meet a 43-year-old woman who had a hysterectomy and thought she had cancer because of a hospital lab mixup

Cassandra Barksdale, a 43-year-old woman from Atlanta, claims she was incorrectly diagnosed with cancer and underwent an unnecessary hysterectomy due to a lab error. Her lawsuit against Kaiser Permanente alleges that another patient's tissue sample was incorrectly labeled as hers. As a result, she underwent a full hysterectomy on May 15, 2025, thinking she would receive chemotherapy instructions.

It remains unclear how this mix-up occurred. In September, Barksdale learned that DNA analysis revealed the labeled tissue belonged to someone else. Her attorney, Shannan Young, stated that Barksdale sought treatment for heavy bleeding and fibroids at Kaiser Permanente Southwood Medical Center in Jonesboro, Georgia. She believed she had an aggressive form of endometrial uterine cancer for months, causing her and her sons significant emotional distress.

Kaiser Permanente acknowledged the error and stated they had implemented measures to prevent such incidents in the future. The company remains committed to resolving the matter fairly with Barksdale and her legal counsel. Privacy laws prevent public disclosure of the other patient's situation. While the frequency of pathology sample mislabeling is unknown, a 2011 study identified three instances of biopsy sample misidentification over two years.

Labs employ various strategies to minimize errors, such as barcode systems and point-of-care testing. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages, emphasizing that no amount of money can restore Barksdale's health or erase the pain she endured.
