Israel has the power to dominate, but not to lead the region

Israel possesses military capabilities to dominate certain regions, but these achievements do not translate to true regional leadership, according to an analysis published last Tuesday. Ground victories in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and Iran have not built Israel's hegemony; instead, they have eroded it. Philosopher Antonio Gramsci's distinction between domination (coercion through force) and hegemony (leadership achieved through consent) applies to the Israeli situation.

While military campaigns have dismantled Hamas, Hezbollah, and damaged Iran's missile and nuclear programs, these tactical victories have not resulted in the construction of true hegemony. The Israeli economy and tech sector may seem robust, but the country's economic power and technological dominance are confined to a limited sector - cybersecurity - and are tightly integrated within the American ecosystem.

Israel's shekel is not a reserve currency, and its stock exchange is closely tied to Nasdaq. The country's dependence on American assistance is substantial, with over $130 billion in aid since 1948. This military and economic dependence, coupled with growing international criticism and a decline in public support, suggests that Israel's position is more one of subordinate integration than genuine leadership.
