Israel accused of weaponising archaeology at ancient West Bank sites

Israel is accused of weaponizing archaeology at ancient West Bank sites, particularly in the occupied territory of Sebastia. The Israeli authorities are taking possession of approximately 450 acres of land to develop a national park, reportedly without offering adequate compensation to the Palestinian landowners. This land loss is deeply significant for the affected families, who view their land as integral to their heritage and identity.

Nahed Sakha, a local restaurant owner, laments the potential loss of his livelihood and his emotional connection to the land. Similarly, the village mayor, Mohammed Azem, and other residents are concerned about the impact of the Israeli plan on their access to the archaeological site, which dates back thousands of years and has remains from various historical periods, including Roman, Jewish, Crusader, and Ottoman eras.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has designated Sebastia as a World Heritage Site and added it to its List of World Heritage in Danger, citing the planned expropriation and creation of the Samaria (Shomron) national park as the main threat. The Israeli government has allocated nearly £27.8 million to expand its control over archaeological sites in the West Bank, some of which are administered by the Palestinian Authority.

The Israeli activist Alon Arad, who leads Emek Shaveh, an organization committed to ensuring the ancient heritage of the region benefits all communities, asserts that the Israeli authorities have failed to consult local communities and residents in the planning process. He emphasizes that the land in question belongs to the Palestinian people and should be developed with their input.

The Israeli Foreign Minister, Gideon Saar, contends that UNESCO's designation does not alter historical Jewish ties to the West Bank and that the move could undermine Palestinian efforts to counter the land seizures.
