Iran sets conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz as talks near a critical stage

Iran has outlined preconditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, including compensation for war damages, which could hinder a potential deal to lift the blockade. The strait, a critical route for global trade, has been under an effective blockade since the US and Israel launched attacks in late February. Iran now seeks to charge tolls for passage, targeting ships it believes are avoiding its preferred route.

The recent collapse of a ceasefire and repeated attacks on vessels have exacerbated tensions. Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, stated discussions with Oman over the strait's management were nearing completion, but emphasized that reopening the strait is contingent on Iran's demands, which also include an end to war and aggression against Iran and its allies in multiple regions.

Security chief Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr further detailed Iran's demands, including the lifting of the US naval blockade, sanctions, release of frozen assets, and compensation for wartime damage. Iran's Revolutionary Guards insisted the reopening has nothing to do with ongoing negotiations with Oman, positioning Iran's conditions as non-negotiable.

Meanwhile, the UAE condemned a missile attack on an ADNOC tanker, while the UK noted a fire on a ship off Oman, both incidents potentially linked to Iran's actions. Oman condemned the attacks but maintained positive negotiations with Iran. The previous Iran-US deal aimed to facilitate discussions on permanent settlement, with provisions for the strait's future management, but the conditions set by Iran now create significant obstacles to any resolution.
