Iran says Strait of Hormuz deal with Oman close; demands U.S. yield on conditions

U.S. Vice President JD Vance stated on Saturday that Washington is working on a safe shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, while maintaining pressure on Iran. During an interview with Fox News host Kayleigh McEnany, Vance mentioned Iran's commitment to not firing on commercial ships, but added, "we don't trust it." The U.S. is seeking maximum oil and gas flow through the strait, as per reports.

Vance's remarks follow Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claiming that reopening the strait depends on Washington accepting Tehran's conditions, distancing the issue from ongoing negotiations between Iran and Oman. Tehran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also revealed that a provisional shipping route is being worked out, but reopening the strait remains subject to additional conditions.

Meanwhile, the U.S. expects an agreement between Iran and Oman soon, which would allow standard commercial oil shipments to resume, potentially lifting the current blockade on Iranian ports.
