Iran executes 71 in July as war pushes crackdown out of view

Iran executed 71 people in July, including six protesters, according to Iran Human Rights (IHR), a monitoring group based in Norway. The group documented at least 444 executions from January to July 2026, with only 67 cases announced by Iranian authorities. This surge in executions comes amidst international focus on Iran's military confrontation with the United States and Israel, making arrests, death sentences, and alleged abuses less visible.

IHR also verified 377 cases independently, while missing over 400 others due to verification challenges. The figures show a parallel situation where international attention has largely been on military operations, the Strait of Hormuz, and economic consequences of the conflict. Inside Iran, capital punishment continues at a frequent pace, primarily for drug trafficking, murder, and security-related charges, including six protesters executed last month.

Of the 71 executions in July, 36 were for murder, 26 for drug-related offenses, eight for security charges, and one for rape. The figures also include 63 executions for national-security charges, 227 for qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, and 143 for drug offenses. Twelve women, 17 foreign nationals, and at least 80 ethnic minorities were among those executed.

Only two executions were made public. The director of IHR, Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, noted that executions have returned to a daily occurrence, mainly for charges like drug trafficking or murder, with continued executions of protesters. He believes international priorities, including preserving regional stability and containing the conflict, have overshadowed the human rights situation in Iran.
