ICE says it expects to equip every field officer with body cameras by the end of August

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced on Saturday that it plans to equip all field officers and agents with body cameras by the end of August. This rapid expansion could result in a detailed visual record of the federal government's immigration enforcement operations. However, it remains unclear whether the public will have access to this footage.

The agency defended its body-worn camera policy, despite concerns about provisions allowing ICE leadership to withhold or indefinitely delay footage following serious injuries or deaths in custody. Acting Director David J. Venturella stated that these restrictions are meant to protect investigations and privacy, and align with federal law and policies at other federal law enforcement agencies.

The restrictions, as outlined by the AP report, do not govern every release of body-camera footage. The focus was on ICE's policy for releasing footage after serious injuries or deaths in custody, which is determined to be in the "best interests of the agency." ICE has been under scrutiny following the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old motorist in Maine and another ICE officer's shooting of a Houston homebuilder, both incidents not recorded with body cameras.

Venturella emphasized ICE's commitment to transparency and accountability, stating that they are "on track to equip every officer and agent in the field with body-worn cameras by the end of August." However, the policy has drawn criticism, with critics noting that selective releases are common in some law enforcement agencies, but are usually not explicitly stated in policy.
