Ghampani Lungu breaks Durban City hearts as Orlando Pirates reach MTN8 semi-finals

Orlando Pirates secured their place in the MTN8 semi-finals after overcoming a 10-man Durban City side, thanks to a last-minute goal from Ghampani Lungu. The defending champions appeared set to struggle as they failed to capitalize on their numerical advantage for most of the match. The first half was marked by a moment of confusion from Durban City midfielder Brooklyn Poggenpoel, who lost possession to Tshepang Moremi, resulting in a penalty and red card to Poggenpoel in the 35th minute.

Patrick Maswanganyi scored the opening goal for Pirates, putting them ahead. Durban City were reduced to 10 men after captain Nkosinathi Sibisi was injured, giving Pirates an opportunity to dominate. Jean Lwamba leveled the score for Durban City in the second half. Despite the pressure, Pirates held their ground and created several scoring opportunities in the first 45 minutes.

The visitors took the lead through Lwamba in the 60th minute. Durban City managed to level the score at the beginning of the second half, but Pirates increased their pressure. After extra time, Lungu's decisive goal in the 119th minute ensured Orlando Pirates would progress to the semi-finals, keeping their hopes alive of winning the MTN8 for a fifth consecutive season.
