FSAI recalls seed mix, sesame seeds over salmonella risk

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has recalled various batches of seed mix and sesame seeds due to a salmonella risk. The alert covers several products from different brands and suppliers.

For instance, SuperValu Seed Mix in 200g packs with batch codes 163 and 166, and a best before date of May 2027, have been recalled. Additionally, SuperValu Sesame Seeds in 200g packs with batch codes 167 and 168, also dated May 2027, are affected.

Gem Sesame Seeds in 1kg packs with batch codes 155 and 177, and a best before date of May 2027, have been recalled. Sysco Sesame Seeds in 1kg packs with batch codes 147, 169, 189, and 203, spanning best before dates from April to June 2027, are also affected.

Larger quantities, such as sesame seeds in 25kg lots with identifiers 32308 and 32704, dated March 1, 2027, have also been recalled. Sowans Sesame Seeds in 100g packs with batch code 155, and a best before date of May 2027, are included in the recall.

Even Compania Indilor Orientale, specifically Sesame Seeds with lot L1312242 and a batch code, dated July 2026, have been recalled. Symptoms of salmonella infection typically appear 12 to 36 hours after exposure, but can range from six to 72 hours. Common symptoms include diarrhoea, which may sometimes be bloody, along with fever, headache, and abdominal cramps.

The illness generally lasts four to seven days, though diarrhoea can be severe enough to necessitate hospital admission. Elderly individuals, infants, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness. Retailers have been asked to remove the affected products from shelves, while consumers are advised not to consume them and caterers should not use them.
