Fijian Vunilagi dies in Japan from suspected heatstroke after training

Fijian rugby player Saimoni Vunilagi has passed away due to suspected heatstroke following a training session, according to Kyuden Voltex, the Japanese second division team where he trained. Vunilagi, 26 years old, was discovered displaying symptoms of severe heatstroke after team practice on Monday, 3 August 2026, and was subsequently taken to a hospital.

Despite the efforts of the medical team, he tragically succumbed to his condition on Friday, 7 August. The team and all associates are deeply saddened by the sudden news. Although Vunilagi had only recently joined Kyuden Voltex, his positive demeanor and powerful playing style had generated high expectations for his performance in the upcoming season.

The club humbly requests privacy for the family during this period of grief and asks for condolences. Vunilagi, who stands 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighs 18 stone 6 pounds, previously played for Tokyo Sungoliath in Japan's top flight. He had enrolled in a university in Japan and started his professional career in 2023. The Japan Rugby League One organization also extends its heartfelt condolences to Vunilagi's family and all those affected by this unfortunate incident.
