Families urged to take lead in protecting children as digital threats grow

Families must take a more proactive role in safeguarding children from the complex online threats that are growing in Malaysia, according to Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil. The minister emphasized the importance of effective digital protection beginning within households, with parents, educators, and Parent-Teacher Associations (PIBG) collaborating to ensure children use the Internet safely, ethically, and responsibly.

Fahmi made these remarks during the opening of the 2026 Safe Internet Parent-Teacher Association Convention in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, an event organized by Yayasan GoStrong Malaysia and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Nearly 500 attendees, including parents, teachers, PIBG leaders, school administrators, government officials, and community representatives, gathered for the conference, themed "Safe Internet, Everyone's Responsibility."

The convention aimed to enhance cooperation among families, schools, government agencies, and communities to boost digital literacy and shield children from online dangers. MCMC highlighted the rising exposure of children to risks such as cyberbullying, online scams, digital exploitation, and harmful content, stressing that stronger family involvement is crucial for cultivating a digitally savvy and resilient generation while mitigating cybercrime risks and enhancing online safety.

The third annual event, previously held in Pahang and Perak, seeks to empower parents and PIBG to lead the charge in protecting children from digital threats. Subsequent editions will take place in Johor, Sabah, and Sarawak as part of a nationwide endeavor to educate over one million Malaysians about online safety throughout 2026.

Topics will encompass online scams, cyberbullying, appropriate age limits for social media usage, and the sexual exploitation and abuse of children. MCMC pledged to expand digital literacy and advocacy initiatives while fortifying partnerships with schools, communities, and other stakeholders. They will also continue their regulatory and enforcement duties to foster a safer, more trustworthy, and inclusive online space, especially for children and vulnerable populations.
