EU Holds Talks with Big Tech over Ceuta Misinformation

EU leaders are urging major technology companies to enhance their monitoring of social media platforms for misinformation, particularly during crisis situations. This call comes in the wake of the Ceuta border crisis, where misinformation on platforms such as TikTok, Telegram, and Meta played a significant role in exacerbating the situation.

Henna Virkkunen, the EU Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy, emphasized the need for increased EU monitoring of these platforms during crises. She stressed that platforms must take decisive action to maintain the integrity of the digital space, especially during times of emergency.

After meetings with representatives from TikTok and Meta, Virkkunen underscored the importance of bolstering cooperation with fact-checkers. The incident involving the Ceuta border has highlighted the challenges faced by Europe in addressing issues related to immigration and security. The estimated death toll from the crisis ranges from 80 in Spain to 11 in Morocco, with rights groups estimating over 140 fatalities.

The incident has reignited Europe's political debate on immigration and security, with Spain and Morocco blaming each other over the events. Spanish authorities claimed that human traffickers exploited a Spanish Supreme Court ruling, while Moroccan authorities accused Madrid of failing to prevent the thousands of migrants who crossed the border. The situation in Ceuta has further fueled the ongoing European discussion on early-warning systems and social media monitoring as part of the bloc's shared assessment capabilities.
