Diplomatic tensions over Malvinas oil

Diplomatic tensions are escalating over the ambitious Sea Lion oil project in the Malvinas region, threatening relations between Argentina, Israel, and Chile. The project, valued at US$1.8 billion, is being developed by Israeli company Navitas Petroleum, which controls 65% of the venture. Argentine authorities have disapproved of Navitas' activities in the region since 2022, but the current Milei administration has neither enforced sanctions nor taken any new measures against the company or its Israeli counterpart, Navitas Petroleum Development and Production Limited.

This has left Argentina in a difficult position, as it attempts to balance its stance on the sovereignty dispute with its relationship to a pet ally, Israel. The controversy has intensified following Presidential Spokesman Adrián Ravier's admission of ignorance regarding the situation during a recent press conference.
