Defence ministry initiates efforts to co-join 6th-Generation fighter aircraft programme: Parliamentary panel

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence has recommended the Ministry of Defence to outline a plan and expedite the process for acquiring sixth-generation fighter aircraft, according to a report presented in Parliament. The committee sought information from the ministry regarding the roadmap for the acquisition of such advanced aircraft, as they are crucial for enhancing India's air domain capabilities in modern, air-centric warfare scenarios.

The report highlights that two consortia are currently working on the sixth-generation aircraft development. One is a consortium comprising the UK, Italy, and Japan, while the other is a France-Germany partnership. The Indian Air Force (IAF) is reportedly considering joining one of these consortia to ensure they do not fall behind in acquiring advanced aircraft to remain competitive in the current geopolitical landscape.

The committee emphasized the need for a technical upgrade of the aircraft as a top priority to bolster the air force's combat capability. They also sought a status report on the development of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) and any prepared roadmap with a tentative timeline for acquisition, to be submitted for the committee's perusal.

The committee commended the Indian Army's role in safeguarding national security during Operation Sindoor and urged sustained investment in defence preparedness, including prioritizing the induction of advanced weapon systems and necessary infrastructure. The committee expects defense expenditure to be proportional to the increase in defense spending by neighboring countries, aiming for the Indian Army to maintain and strengthen its speed and capability against potential adversaries.
