Cloudflare says humans could become a "rounding error" as bots generate 1,000 times more internet traffic

Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince recently disclosed that non-human internet traffic could reach up to 1,000 times the volume of human traffic in just five years. This alarming prediction comes after bots already surpassed human traffic online, just a few months ago. Cloudflare's CFO, Thomas Seifert, made the shocking forecast during the company's Q2 earnings call.

The rapid surge in non-human traffic is attributed to the growing influence of AI, particularly agentic systems that behave similarly to human users but function at machine speed and can generate thousands of requests with a single prompt. This phenomenon is exemplified by AI-powered shopping assistants that can examine hundreds of online retailers on behalf of a single user.

The consequences of such a shift in internet traffic dynamics are significant. Seifert emphasized the need for Cloudflare's services to help the web become more efficient and secure in the face of this impending change. The Dead Internet Theory, which posits that the internet is dominated by bots and AI, could become a reality soon, potentially leading to the demise of independent websites that have thrived on the web's business model since the 1990s.

Furthermore, a traffic landscape dominated by bots and AI raises privacy concerns and may drive more people away from the online world. A recent poll revealed that 97% of respondents perceived the internet as a "hellscape" compared to its early stages, and this sentiment is likely to intensify as the web evolves into an AI-driven realm.
