Chipotle Pulls Jalapeños Amid Salmonella Outbreak: Should You Worry?

Chipotle has removed jalapeños from select restaurants across the United States due to a potential link to a Salmonella outbreak. The fast-casual chain assured customers that the immediate threat of foodborne illness is low, urging everyone to follow basic food safety measures. Chipotle traced the jalapeños to a common source and replaced them with a different batch from another grower.

The Food and Drug Administration and the Minnesota Department of Health are investigating the source of the outbreak, which has resulted in at least 110 reported illnesses in the state. Chipotle's Chief Corporate Affairs and Food Safety Officer, Laurie Schalow, emphasized their commitment to food safety and cooperation with public health authorities.

While the risk is low, people should be aware of the symptoms of Salmonella, which include diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, and nausea. High-risk groups, such as children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems, should seek medical attention if they experience severe symptoms. To prevent Salmonella, Chipotle and health experts recommend thorough cooking, separate handling of raw and cooked foods, washing hands frequently, and practicing good food storage habits.
