B.C. premier declares wildfire state of emergency

On Saturday, British Columbia's Premier David Eby declared a provincial state of emergency due to a rapidly growing wildfire in the Okanagan region. The Bald Range fire, which began spreading on Friday, forced thousands of residents to evacuate their homes, marking a significant escalation in the province's wildfire situation. Eby described the situation as "like a bomb going off in the Summerland region," where officials reported homes and properties destroyed, and people trapped, requiring rescue efforts.

Air evacuations were underway, and emergency crews, including firefighters, RCMP, search-and-rescue teams, and firefighting aircraft, worked tirelessly through the night to rescue those cut off by the fire. The province utilized 18 aircraft to rescue over 50 people and deployed additional resources, including personnel from other Canadian provinces, Mexico, and Australia.

Premier Eby and Fire Chief Cliff Chapman warned of more evacuation orders throughout the fire season, as conditions were described as extremely volatile, with 105 active fires burning across the province. The state of emergency provides the province with additional powers to secure accommodations, impose local travel restrictions, and prevent price gouging or fuel rationing if necessary.

As of Saturday morning, more than 20,000 people across British Columbia had been displaced, making it the largest evacuation event in the province so far this summer.
