Atletico Madrid step up pursuit of free-agent Dusan Vlahovic after Juventus exit

Atletico Madrid have intensified their pursuit of former Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, following the Italian giants' exit from the market, according to Sport. The Spanish club is exploring the possibility of signing the Serbia international on a free transfer. Vlahovic, 26, has been a sought-after free agent across Europe since departing Juventus in June after his contract expired.

While Manchester United, Barcelona, and Besiktas have shown interest, Atletico’s approach appears particularly compelling, as Vlahovic has reportedly made them his top choice. Sources suggest the forward is eagerly awaiting an offer from Atletico and prefers a move to the Metropolitano, having previously turned down the club in 2021.

Atletico had shown interest in Vlahovic during his time at Fiorentina, but he ultimately chose to remain in Italy before joining Juventus for €70 million in January 2022. However, his four-and-a-half-year stint in Turin was less than successful, failing to meet the expectations of a high-profile signing. Vlahovic only managed 68 goals in 168 appearances for Juventus, largely due to inconsistency stemming from managerial instability and recurring groin injuries.

His performances last season were particularly disappointing, as he scored just seven goals in 19 Serie A matches, contributing to Juventus' sixth-place finish.

Atletico's interest in Vlahovic may hinge on the future of Alexander Sorloth, another target for Turkish club Fenerbahce. Reports indicate Fenerbahce is considering a loan deal for the Norwegian with a €35 million buyout clause. Atletico has reportedly discussed a similar arrangement for Vlahovic, but accommodating both forwards could be challenging, given their similar playing styles.

The club would need to balance their squad dynamics, potentially opting for Sorloth and Vlahovic if star winger Julian Alvarez secures his desired exit.
