AFL chair apologises for his part in Cats concussion contract saga

AFL Commission chairman Craig Drummond has issued an apology for his role in Geelong's concussion contract saga involving defender Jake Kolodjashnij. Drummond was Geelong's president two years ago when the contract was signed, which held the player legally responsible for future brain trauma to prevent the club from facing court action. The AFL is set to fine the Cats over the contract, with discussions taking place this weekend.

The contract, which Kolodjashnij's agent was unaware of, was never informed to the AFL Players Association (AFLPA) or the AFL. Despite passing an independent medical test, Kolodjashnij was deemed at risk of future complications from head injuries. Drummond, speaking to ABC Sport, emphasized that the player's welfare was the primary concern throughout the discussions.

The Geelong board carefully weighed the obligations to both the player and the club. Drummond acknowledged that the process was flawed, and the club will remove the waiver from the informed consent document. Drummond also clarified that he would not participate in AFL deliberations regarding the matter.

AFL boss Andrew Dillon reiterated that the situation is complex, particularly concerning concussion issues in contact sports. Dillon explained that Kolodjashnij was cleared by the AFL concussion panel multiple times over several months but was still made aware of the risks of continuing to play. Dillon stated that the contract was lodged alongside the player's playing agreement, and the AFL is awaiting an explanation from Geelong regarding its absence.

The Cats are expected to receive a fine for the contract saga, having initially been cleared of wrongdoing.
