54,000-litre petrol tanker catches fire at Kawanpe on Tema-Buipe journey

A fuel tanker carrying approximately 54,000 litres of petrol was involved in a fire incident at Kawanpe, situated in the Kintampo North Municipality of Bono East Region. The incident occurred during the tanker's journey from Tema to Buipe. According to a Facebook post by the Ghana National Fire Service, the driver of the tanker heard a loud noise emanating from the vehicle's rear axle. Soon after, the driver observed smoke and flames originating from the tanker, indicating a potential serious fuel-related fire risk.

Firefighters from the Buipe Fire Station were promptly dispatched to the scene to combat the fire. They utilized water and foam concentrate to tackle the blaze, successfully containing the flames. The firefighting efforts prevented the fire from escalating into a major disaster, thus averting potential casualties among the driver, firefighters, and other road users in the vicinity. The substantial amount of petrol onboard the tanker posed a significant threat due to its potential to spread the fire.

Once the fire was under control, the remaining petrol in the affected tanker was transferred to another tanker. This second tanker then transported the residual fuel safely to Buipe, thereby ensuring the consignment continued its journey towards its intended destination without further interruption. The transfer of the remaining petrol was undertaken only after the immediate fire threat had been neutralized. Importantly, no casualties were reported following the tanker fire.
