Starting August 25, American Airlines will no longer automatically upgrade elite frequent flyers to business class on several long-haul domestic routes. Instead, these high-status passengers will receive complimentary upgrades to premium economy. This change reflects the airline's strategy to retain more premium seats for customers who are willing to pay a premium for more space and comfort.

The affected routes include flights between New York's JFK Airport and Los Angeles, Boston to San Francisco, Dallas Fort Worth to Hawaii's Kona and Maui, Phoenix to Maui, and Chicago O'Hare to Maui. Elite flyers who had purchased a premium economy ticket or made a purchase upgrade after booking a coach fare will still receive the complimentary upgrade.

However, the airline cautions that the assignment of seats in premium economy may vary depending on the aircraft type and seat availability. While American Airlines promises to accommodate passengers' preferences, it's worth noting that some premium economy cabins may include middle seats.
