William Orbit, Madonna and Blur Producer, Dies at 69

William Orbit, the electronic musician-turned-producer, has passed away at the age of 69. His family announced his death on Instagram, stating that "William passed away at home on 23rd July 2026." A cause of death was not provided. Born in north London in 1956 as William Wainwright, Orbit dropped out of school at 16 and briefly lived in a squat house.

His career began with the ambient electronic trio Torch Song, which he co-founded with Laurie Mayer and Grant Gilbert in 1980. Orbit's career took off when he secured his first major job composing the soundtrack for the 1986 film Youngblood, starring Patrick Swayze and Rob Lowe.

Orbit's professional paths crossed with Madonna in the early 1990s when he remixed her singles "Erotica" and "Justify My Love." A decade later, Madonna contacted him to work on her album Ray of Light, which earned three Grammys, including Best Dance Recording for the title track. Orbit continued to work with Madonna, contributing to her albums Music (2000) and MDNA (2012).

Beyond Madonna, he also produced hits for British girl group All Saints, including "Pure Shores" and "Black Coffee," and contributed to Blur's 1999 album 13 after taking over from Stephen Street as their producer. Orbit released seven studio albums under his own name, with the latest being 2022's The Painter.

Madonna remembered the moment they met, describing it as an epiphany that changed her perception of music. She credited Orbit with giving her "a magic carpet to fly on" and visiting "many unrealized dreams." Other artists, such as Arca, Kelly Lee Owens, Alison Goldfrapp, and the Spice Girls' Mel C, also paid tribute to Orbit on his Instagram page.
