Union leaders have urged the UK Prime Minister to address the cost of living crisis by pressuring President Trump to end the ongoing war in Iran. The 10 trade unions, representing over 2.3 million workers, called on Burnham to revoke permission for the US to use RAF bases in the Middle East for airstrikes against Iran. This move, they argue, would help alleviate the rising energy and food costs faced by British households.

After meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband emphasized that the UK had not participated in offensive actions during the war and that the US use of British territories was for defensive purposes. However, the unions expressed deep concern over the matter, stating that the war has only deepened the cost of living crisis. They noted that the average British household has seen its energy bills increase by £221 and food bills by £32.80 since the conflict began.

The unions argue that allowing the US to conduct airstrikes from UK bases, such as RAF Fairford and the Indian Ocean territory of Diego Garcia, has put Britain in a position of complicity in potential war crimes and contributed to a global economic disaster. They have called upon Burnham to take action in order to support the global effort for a lasting ceasefire in the Iran conflict.
