Why is Latin America becoming a breeding ground for 'fanatics of Israel'?

Latin America is emerging as a hub for individuals sympathetic to Israel, driven by a combination of disinformation campaigns, arms deals, and advanced surveillance technology. Right-wing governments in numerous countries have played a pivotal role in strengthening Israel's influence, which contradicts the region's historical alliance with Palestine.

Colombian President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella, who emerged victorious in June's election, is emblematic of this shift. De la Espriella, who previously defended paramilitary groups and had ties to military dictatorships and U.S. President Donald Trump, celebrates Israel's diplomatic victories. He has indicated his intention to suspend Colombia's embassy to Palestine and restore relations with Israel, including relocating the mission to Jerusalem.

This trend is not isolated to Colombia; other countries such as El Salvador, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Honduras, and Costa Rica have also seen a rise in right-wing governments. These governments have deepened Latin America's security, diplomatic, and technological ties with Israel, despite widespread criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza, which many deem a genocide.

Notably, Colombian President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella's victory, despite losing the initial run-off to his predecessor, underscores the complex dynamics at play. The region, home to approximately 700,000 Palestinians and 500,000 Jews, is witnessing a significant shift in its stance towards Israel. This change is also reflected in other countries' policies, such as Bolivia's restoration of full diplomatic relations with Israel under its new right-wing president.

The region's security landscape is shaped by the pervasive use of Israeli spyware, Pegasus, which has been utilized to target journalists and opposition figures rather than terrorist groups. Additionally, police forces in Latin America, supported by Israeli weapons, have been involved in escalating violence against civilians, particularly in favelas.

This situation highlights a deepening divide between elite citizens and the general population, with potential implications for Brazil's presidential election in bridging or exacerbating this rift.
