Why Daniel Lissing Left Hallmark's When Calls The Heart

In the concluding episode of Season 5 of Hallmark Channel's "When Calls the Heart," fan-favorite character Jack Thornton — portrayed by Canadian actor Daniel Lissing — met his untimely demise in a sudden offscreen death that occurred after his wedding to Elizabeth Thatcher. This unexpected exit left viewers heartbroken and questioning the sudden change in the storyline.

Shortly after the Season 5 finale, Lissing joined costars Erin Krakow and Lori Loughlin for a Facebook Live aftershow to address the sudden departure. During the broadcast, Lissing revealed that personal circumstances led to his departure from the show, emphasizing that no behind-the-scenes feud existed, stating, "I went to Hallmark and they were nothing but supportive of me. I went to the girls and they were nothing but supportive of me."

With Lissing's exit, the creative team faced challenges in moving forward without the character and dealing with Elizabeth's grief. The decision was made to kill off Jack, who perished off-screen in a landslide while on a training mission at Fort Clay. In the same aftershow, Lori Loughlin discussed the difficult decision-making process, noting that recasting was ruled out due to Lissing's undeniable chemistry with Erin Krakow.

Another option - divorce - was also dismissed as Jack's departure felt out of character. The team ultimately concluded that Jack's death was the only way to have him leave Elizabeth. Two years later, Lissing confirmed he had no regrets about leaving the series, revealing that his exit ultimately led him to his then-fiancée, Nadia.

He stated, "It's funny the way the world works. If I had stayed on the show, and been there during Season 6... then I wouldn't have met Nadia." While Lissing is enjoying life after "When Calls the Heart," he still misses the positive atmosphere and camaraderie he experienced on set, recalling fond memories of working in Vancouver with his Uncle Gary.
