UEFA Maintains World Cup Boycott Despite Infantino’s Apology

The UEFA governing body continues to stand firm on its decision to boycott FIFA-run competitions, maintaining its loss of confidence in FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Despite Infantino publicly apologizing on Wednesday, UEFA believes this does not change the fact that the crisis that has plagued the organization over the past nine days could still recur.

Following a meeting of UEFA’s management board in Rabat, the governing body explained that FIFA’s public support for Infantino has not provided them with assurance that the issues that led to the boycott will not resurface. UEFA’s 55 member associations initially agreed to boycott FIFA tournaments unless Infantino withdrew his privately-funded FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) scheme.

Although the FFE was abandoned last Friday, UEFA insists that the conditions necessary to prevent such a boycott have not been met. These conditions include the withdrawal of proposals to sell off major competitions and promises that such attempts to tarnish the sport will not be made again in the future. UEFA has repeatedly emphasized that these conditions have not been fulfilled.

Moreover, UEFA has made it clear that they have lost confidence in Infantino’s leadership, a stance they continue to uphold. The recent announcement that some individuals employed by Infantino may share his views does not alter UEFA’s position. With the Under-20 Women’s World Cup set to begin in Poland on September 5th, UEFA remains concerned that this could be the first tournament affected by a UEFA-led boycott if no resolution is reached in time.

UEFA remains optimistic about exploiting divisions within FIFA’s leadership, despite the recent show of unity from Infantino following a management board meeting in Rabat.
