Tuduhan Nicky Liow ditarik balik selepas bayar kompaun RM10 juta, kata AGC

In April 2022, businessman Nicky Liow faced 26 charges of corruption involving RM36 million at the Shah Alam Sessions Court. The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) stated that the 26 charges against Liow were withdrawn in 2023 after the businessman paid a RM10 million sum. According to the AGC, Liow submitted representations on the 15th of December 2022 and the 6th of April 2023, asking for all 26 charges against him to be fined under Section 92 of the Prevention of Corruption, Prevention of Bribery and Misuse of Illicitly Gained Property Act 2001.

Based on all the available information, the assessment and consideration of the prosecution, the AGC agreed to offer a RM10 million sum. This amount had been agreed upon by Liow and was paid on May 29, 2023. The resolution also includes the release of a bond worth RM647,366 and the seizure of assets. The AGC clarified this decision in a statement in response to 30 civil society organizations questioning why Liow was discharged without bail.

In April 2022, Liow was accused in the Shah Alam Sessions Court of 26 charges of corruption involving RM36 million. He went into hiding between 2021 and 2022 after police launched a large-scale operation against a group suspected of involvement in the "Macau scam". While in hiding, he was accused in absentia for violating the law of being a member of a planned criminal organization, before being granted DNAA.

The AGC emphasized that Liow would be released at any time without legal proceedings, adding that the case was scheduled for trial in four separate blocks between July and September 2023. They stated that the decision was made in accordance with the powers and dignity of the Attorney General's Chambers under the Constitution, without being influenced by external pressure or public sentiment.
