Thai teen kills grandparents, five staff in shooting spree

A 14-year-old boy in Thailand orchestrated a shooting spree, killing a total of seven individuals, including his grandparents and five school staff members. The incident occurred on the outskirts of Bangkok, at the Debsirin Nonthaburi School. The gunman, believed to have suffered from stress related to his studies, fired at least 26 bullets using his grandfather's gun, while an additional 34 rounds were found at the scene.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed sadness over the incident, stating that it was terrible for such an event to occur in their country.

Upon discovering the bodies of his grandparents in their home, police noted that the gunman had been experiencing stress related to his studies. One of the school students, an 18-year-old, initially thought the gunfire was caused by firecrackers before realizing it was a gun. The incident is the latest in a series of mass shootings in Thailand in recent years, with the country having the largest number of guns in civilian possession in Southeast Asia.

This is the second school shooting in Thailand this year, following an incident in February where a teacher was killed and a student injured.

Emergency worker Kiatikhun Verapongpradith recounted that the gunman shot himself in the head. Authorities treated students and teachers with injuries in various parts of the school. A seventh-grade girl managed to escape the shooting by climbing over the school fence, recounting how the gunman shot the teacher they were discussing with.

Under Thai laws, illegal possession of firearms can result in imprisonment of up to 10 years, although the police have not reported that the firearm used was illegal. The school had an enrollment of approximately 3,100 students and 147 teachers in the 2025 academic year.
