SK hynix Ramps Up AI Memory Investment

SK hynix is making a significant investment in memory production, totaling 54.3 trillion won ($38.0 billion), to secure a leading position in the AI era's booming memory demand. On August 7, the company's board of directors approved $35.2 billion for the construction of the 'Y2' fab in the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster and $19.1 billion for the Cheongju 'M17' fab.

This investment is a follow-up to a mid-to-long term strategy announced in June, aiming to maximize the supply capacity of next-generation DRAM and NAND flash using Yongin and Cheongju as pillars. The Y2 fab, the second production line in the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster, will be a specialized DRAM base with a floor area of 341,000 pyeong.

Construction is set to begin in July 2027, with the first cleanroom operational by June 2029. The Y1 fab, already under construction, is expected to open its cleanroom in February 2027, with the Yongin Cluster completion timeline now set for 2033, 12 years ahead of the original plan. Cheongju will serve as the NAND flash production base, with the M17 fab of 206,000 pyeong beginning construction in February 2027 and starting cleanroom operations in December 2028.

The investment will be phased until April 2031, with SK hynix adjusting equipment deployment timing according to market conditions and customer demand trends. Omdia predicts a high compound annual growth rate of 19% for the DRAM and NAND markets until 2030. SK hynix's official stated that this investment will bolster the domestic semiconductor ecosystem's competitiveness and contribute to regional economic revitalization.
