Singapore jails Hong Kong mother, son for biting officer, attacking bystander at Changi airport

On June 30, 2024, a tense situation unfolded at Singapore's Changi Airport, Terminal 3, involving a mother and her son. The mother, Chan Sui-kwan at 65 years old, and her son, Chan Wing-kwan at 42 years old, found themselves entangled in a dispute that ultimately led to legal consequences. The outlet Dimsum Daily reported that the son wrongly believed people were laughing at him, leading to a confrontation, during which he kicked his mother.

The conflict escalated when the son confronted a 69-year-old passerby, who had come to check on the mother's well-being. The son challenged the man to a fight, and this confrontation continued in another section of the terminal. The son's actions continued to escalate when he kicked his mother again and later charged at a bystander, resulting in a series of punches that left the victim with injuries including a head haematoma, abrasions, and bruising.

The mother, resisting arrest, was later found to have bitten one of the officers attempting to detain her, resulting in a 1cm bite mark and bruising. Both Chan Sui-kwan and Chan Wing-kwan appeared in court multiple times, with their court dates spread across 2024 and 2025. However, they failed to attend a scheduled hearing on July 22, 2026, leading to the issuance of arrest warrants. They were subsequently convicted on July 29.
