SC refuses to entertain plea for FIR, probe against former HC judge Yashwant Varma

The Supreme Court declined to hear a petition seeking registration of a First Information Report (FIR) and a court-monitored investigation into allegations of a large cash discovery following a fire at the former Allahabad High Court judge Yashwant Varma's residence. Advocate Ghanshyam Upadhyay argued that simply resigning from office does not absolve him of criminal liability for unaccounted money.

However, the court dismissed the plea, stating that the earlier petition was also dismissed on similar grounds. Justice PS Narasimha criticized Upadhyay's approach, saying it was a misuse of the judicial process for cheap publicity. Upadhyay emphasized that a high court judge is a public servant and should not be immune from prosecution, even after retirement. The court, however, refused to entertain the petition, dismissing it as baseless.
