NPP vows to defend members against alleged political persecution

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has pledged to stand by its members against what the party claims are political persecutions from the Government. NPP National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha made this assertion during the party's "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration in Accra. He contended that the Government is employing state institutions to target opposition members rather than tackling the nation's economic issues.

Mustapha emphasized that while he supports the accountability of state institutions, he opposes any form of persecution. He vowed that the NPP will not permit the Government to intimidate its members into submission. The demonstration aimed to shed light on governance concerns, constitutional rights, and the health of democratic institutions.

Mustapha also alleged that the removal of the previous Chief Justice had compromised the Judiciary's independence and instilled fear within the justice system. He cautioned that political activists should not face repercussions for their viewpoints and warned that not addressing such actions could lead to targeting other groups, including the media.

Mustapha stressed that democracy is under threat, stating that Ghanaians voted with the expectation of lower food, fuel prices, and living costs, not persecution of political opponents. Klottey Korle Constituency NPP Chairman Faisal Ibrahim Cisse echoed these concerns, highlighting the rise in arrests of individuals for comments made on social media and public platforms.

He also alleged that some citizens were detained without due process and argued that freedom of expression is protected under the Constitution. Cisse suggested that those who feel defamed could seek redress through civil proceedings rather than criminal charges. He urged the Government to uphold democratic principles and ensure that the law is applied fairly to all, regardless of political affiliations.
